OVERVIEW
24.08.01 Macquarie University hosts a diversity of social, cultural, craft, political, welfare and sporting bodies as well as academic organisations. Most of these organisations have at some time a need to publicise their activities by exhibiting promotional material.
24.08.02 The University fully appreciates the need for the advertising of these University activities in traditional ways. This is an important part of the variety and stimulation of our daily campus life. However, we ought to be able to meet this need with a degree of self-discipline and respect for our environment. One of the University's greatest assets is the fine campus it inhabits and it would be a great pity not to actively discourage the visual pollution of our environment with promotional materials.
24.08.03 All Macquarie University and associated organisations have the privilege of displaying promotional material in agreed areas for a specified period of time.
Vice-Chancellor 8 March 1996
24.08.04 There is to be due regard for the aesthetic appearance of the campus. Every effort should be made to display quality promotional material which complements the University environment.
24.08.05 Promotional materials should not be placed in such a way as to affect health or safety.
24.08.06 Promotional materials should not be placed in excessive numbers so as to exclude promotion by others.
24.08.07 Originators should include their identification on their promotional materials either by name or organisation/office of origin. The placing of such materials without identification will make them subject to immediate removal.
24.08.08 Originators placing promotional material must remove it as soon as possible after the activity date, not to exceed 14 days.
24.08.09 Failure of the originators of promotional material to remove the material within the specified time will result in removal of the material by the University at the cost of the originator.
24.08.10 After elections are completed, the Students Council/Unions/Associations will be held responsible for arranging with candidates for the expeditious removal of materials (see 24.08.08/9).
24.08.11 The advertising of commercial venues/activities on campus not associated with the University is considered inappropriate. Such materials will be removed as soon as practical.
24.08.12 All promotional material must be attached with thumb tacks or tape only, as appropriate, except that of FILMSOC, which may paste cinema materials on the 'ventilation tower' adjacent to Macquarie Theatre. Glued materials will be removed as soon as possible at the promoter's expense.
24.08.13 All surfaces will be cleaned back to the base surface at least twice a year to suit the University calendar. In addition, cleaning will be accomplished for suitable preparation of venues for specific occasions, e.g. graduations.
24.08.14 The placement of banners requires special consideration. Care must be taken to ensure the safety of individuals placing banners for display or those who may be in the vicinity of such banners. Care must also be taken so as not to damage structures or vegetation on campus. The placing of any banners must be co-ordinated through the Buildings and Grounds Office for approval and determination of appropriate fittings and attachments. (Minimum of one week prior notice required.)
24.08.15 The use of handbills for promotions is discouraged. However, if handbills are distributed it will be the responsibility of the distributor to ensure that discarded handbills are collected from all areas of the campus, i.e. gardens, footpaths, parking lots, etc., the day following their distribution (see Section 24.08.09).
24.08.16 There should be no interference with promotional material of another exhibitor.
24.08.17 Promotional material of an objectionable nature to the general public must not be displayed (sexist, racist, language, etc.). Such material will be removed.
24.08.18 Promotional material must not be placed on glass fronts of display boards so as to cover material inside.
24.08.19 Promotional material must not be placed on campus light standards, directories, street or traffic and parking signs.
24.08.20 Promotional materials must not be placed in toilets or lifts.
24.08.21 Display materials must not be displayed at a level higher than 3 metres above the ground.
24.08.22 No promotional material, in whatever form, is to be placed on building exteriors, entrances, doors, stairwells, or interior surfaces other than specifically provided display boards, except as listed in 24.08.26. ALL such material will be removed as soon as practical at the expense of the promoters. This includes bus bays.
24.08.23 Posters, banners, etc. must not be attached to sculptures, trees, shrubs, rocks, etc.
24.08.24 Chalk may only be used on exterior footpaths (not steps) exposed to rainfall. The use of crayons, felt tip pens, etc. or any type of paint is not permitted.
24.08.25 Paper materials are not to be placed on footpaths as they tear/shred to become tripping hazards and unacceptable pollutants.
24.08.26 Locations where display materials may be attached are as follows:
24.08.27 Defacement/destruction or removal of posters or other advertising material displayed in accordance with these guidelines will be regarded as an unacceptable breach of these guidelines.
24.08.28 Promotional material control on/in the University Union Building is the responsibility of the Union and should be managed within the spirit and intent of these guidelines.
24.08.29 Any materials placed in contravention of these guidelines are subject to immediate removal at the expense of the originator. All improperly placed material will be removed fortnightly and charges referred where appropriate.
